Keep your cold plunge cold in summer: the ice math
A 100-gallon stock tank in 90°F heat wants two bags of ice per session. Four cheap interventions cut that in half, ranked by what returns your money.

The short answer
A 100-gallon uninsulated stock tank sitting in 90°F afternoon heat, held around a 50°F plunge, wants roughly one 20-lb bag of ice per session with a decent cover and closer to two without. Four cheap interventions shift that ratio in descending order of return: a floating cover, shade, an insulating wrap, and a chiller. The cover alone does more than the other three combined, and it costs $20.

Every number below sits on the same assumed baseline, because “keeping a cold plunge cold” varies wildly with what “cold” and “plunge” mean.

Home cold-water taps in most US locations sit somewhere in the 55–70°F range in summer, warmer where the mains run close to the surface. That is the starting point before the ice does its job. The rest is a battle between three thermal loads (sun, warm air, and the tub gaining heat back from the ground) and one variable input, which is however many bags you dump in.
The physics is not complicated. Melting a pound of ice absorbs about 143 BTU. Warming the resulting pound of water from 32°F to 50°F absorbs another 18. Every BTU the sun adds to the tank during the day is a BTU your ice has to work off before it can pull the water down.
Intervention 1: a floating cover ($15–30)
The single highest-return upgrade on any outdoor cold plunge. A cheap solar pool cover, cut with kitchen scissors to your tank's rim, blocks the two biggest daytime heat inputs at once: solar radiation onto a dark water surface, and evaporation off the top. It halves the ice bill in a way nothing else on this list comes close to.
A cover does nothing while you are in the water. It works the twenty-three hours the tub is sitting there thinking about warming up. Twelve of those are the ones with sun on them, and those are the hours the math cares about.
Two things people get wrong. Buying a cover that hangs six inches over the rim is worse than no cover, because the overhang traps warm air against the tank wall. Forgetting to put the cover back on after a session is a smaller mistake at five minutes and a bag of ice at five hours.
Intervention 2: shade ($0–100)
Direct summer sun on a dark tank is the largest single heat gain on this list. A tank tucked under a patio roof, a porch, or the north side of a building runs cooler than the same tank in the middle of a lawn at midday, and the gap is not subtle.
Free options first: move the tub. A tank on wheels, or one light enough to shuffle two feet, can chase shade across a deck through the day. If the tub is fixed, a market umbrella clamped over it costs $40 and buys most of the shade the deck can offer.
The cheap paid version is a triangular shade sail from any hardware store. $60 of nylon strung between three fence posts kills 90% of the sun landing on the tank; the drop in ice consumption shows up inside a week. A full pergola does the same job better; it also costs more than a chiller.

Intervention 3: insulate the walls and base ($10–50)
An uninsulated stock tank sitting on hot flagstones is losing heat (or, technically, gaining it) two ways: through the sidewalls into 90°F air, and through the base into 85°F pavers. Both are cheap to fix.
Reflective bubble insulation, the silver stuff sold as radiant barrier, wrapped once around the outside of the tank and taped in place, cuts the sidewall gain noticeably. It is not pretty. A cedar or vinyl-lattice screen around the tank hides the wrap and roughly doubles the insulation value; it also costs an afternoon.
For the base, a $10 piece of half-inch closed-cell foam board between tank and pavers stops the ground-contact conduction. If the tub sits on wood decking, the effect is smaller. If it sits on concrete or stone in the sun, this is the fifteen-dollar fix with the fastest payback.

Intervention 4: a chiller (or an aquarium chiller doing chiller duties)
The other three interventions reduce the heat load on the water. A chiller adds active cooling on top. Whether one is worth the $600–2000 spend is a longer question we handle over here: cold plunge chillers, do you actually need one. This section is about how a chiller fits into the summer ice math specifically.
An aquarium chiller rated for 200–300 gallons will typically hold a 100-gallon plunge at 50°F through most US summers, running a small submersible pump on a loop. Electrical draw lands around 400–600 watts when the compressor is running; a typical monthly cost in July is roughly $10–20 depending on your rate and how often the chiller has to cycle.
The place a chiller earns its price is not summer efficiency in isolation. It is never driving to a gas station for ice bags at 5am again. If time is the constraint, a chiller replaces the ice ritual entirely. If ice bags are $3 and you enjoy the walk, the payback period on a chiller is measured in years.
Common mistakes
- Buying “premium” ice. The 5-lb bags cost per pound roughly what the 20-lb bags cost outright. The plunge does not care about clarity.
- Chasing colder than the practice needs. Every degree colder is a larger heat gradient against the surrounding air, meaning more ice. Sitting at 55°F for a session that runs on schedule beats a 42°F target that only survives when the ice supply cooperates.
- Skipping the cover for aesthetics. A blue plastic disc on a nice cedar-clad tub looks wrong. So does a $60 monthly ice bill. Pick one.
- Over-trusting a chiller spec in a heat dome. Aquarium chillers rated “up to 300 gallons” typically assume around 78°F room temperature. In a 95°F garage they lose a chunk of that capacity and fall behind. Shade helps them too.
Where this fits
