Cold punge chillers: do you actually need one?
For most home plungers, a chiller is a convenience purchase, not a performance one. The cost math, when it's worth it and when it's not.

The short answer
For most home cold plungers, no. A chiller trades roughly twenty minutes of ice-bag hauling per session for about $1,200 up front and roughly $10 to $20 a month of electricity. Whether that trade earns its keep depends on your climate, how often you plunge, and how much you hate driving to the gas station at 6 a.m. It is a convenience purchase, not a performance one. A cold tub without a chiller does the same thing to your nervous system as a cold tub with one.
What a chiller actually does
A chiller is a compressor, an evaporator coil, a small circulator pump, and a thermostat, packed into a box beside the tub. Water leaves the tub, passes through the coil where the refrigerant absorbs its heat, and returns cooled. The unit runs when the water climbs above your set point and idles when it drops back below. In physics, it is doing exactly what your kitchen refrigerator does, only on a tub of water instead of a carton of milk.

What you get for the box: a tub that sits at, say, 5°C without any input from you, twenty-four hours a day, all year. What you give up: the money, the noise (most units run somewhere between a fridge and a small window air-conditioner), a bit of deck space, and an ongoing electricity draw. A half-horsepower residential unit typically pulls around 400 to 600 watts when running, and it does not run all day. On a covered tub in a garage it might average 100 to 200 watts, which lands somewhere in the $10 to $20 a month range at US grid prices.
That is the whole product. Everything above $1,500 buys nicer housing, a smarter controller, a longer warranty, or a brand. Where the "yes" answer starts
The chiller math changes fast in a few specific setups.

You plunge outdoors in a hot climate. In a Florida or Arizona summer, an uninsulated tub climbs to ambient (say 30°C) within a day. Keeping it at 5°C means dumping a 20-lb bag of ice into it every single session. At $3 to $5 a bag, that is $12 to $20 a week just on ice, and it eats fifteen minutes of your practice window before you get in the water. A year of that pays for a chiller.
You plunge every day. Ice-bag logistics get absurd around session five or six per week. The chiller stops being a purchase and starts being a service the tub provides to itself. If your practice is genuinely daily, the ownership curve flips within twelve to eighteen months for most people.
The tub lives somewhere temperature-stable. A basement, garage, or shaded patio sitting at 15 to 20°C ambient asks very little of a chiller. The compressor barely runs, the electricity bill is trivial, and the water sits at your set point with no attention from you. This is where a chiller feels frictionless.
You share the tub with others on a schedule. Ice-bag prep does not scale to two or three people plunging back-to-back at 5:30 a.m. A chilled tub does.
Conversely, the chiller is closer to a waste of money when: you plunge two or three times a week, you live somewhere the tap water is already 12°C or colder for half the year, and the tub is insulated and covered. In that setup the ice math is small, and the chiller mostly sits on your deck being expensive. Can I just use an aquarium chiller instead?
Yes, and a used half-horsepower aquarium chiller off Craigslist runs about $200 to $400. They do the same physics with less polish. The tradeoff is loud, ugly, no thermostat you would call user-friendly, and titanium coils that assume freshwater aquarium chemistry rather than the peroxide or ozone some cold-plunge users add to their water. For a garage setup where nobody sees the box, aquarium units are a fine budget path.
How long does a chiller take to cool a tub down?
Rough math: a half-horsepower unit pulls about 1°C per hour out of 100 gallons at typical starting temperatures. A summer tap fill at 25°C down to 5°C is therefore roughly twenty hours of runtime the first time. After that, the chiller only fights whatever heat gets in through the walls and the lid, which is much less.
Do chillers work in cold weather?
Yes, and they run less. In winter the ambient does most of the cooling work; the chiller mostly holds the floor. Some units have a small heater built in, which sounds odd for a cold plunge but exists to stop the water from freezing solid when the garage drops below 0°C. If your winters get that cold and your tub is uninsulated, this feature matters.
Is a chiller worth it for an indoor tub?
For indoor tubs in a heated room, almost always yes, if the tub is a permanent fixture. Ice-bagging inside is wet, messy, and quietly unfun; the chiller replaces the ritual with silence and a set point. The math tips fast because indoor ambients are stable, the compressor barely works, and the alternative is carrying ice through the house.
Can I split the difference: cover, insulate, ice only in summer?
This is what a lot of cold plungers actually do, and it usually holds up. A good floating cover, an insulated tub, and a bag of ice per session in the four hottest months (with zero ice in the cold half of the year) covers most practices for well under $200 a year in materials. If your setup allows this and your patience for ice logistics holds, the chiller money can go somewhere that returns more.
