What the sticker leaves out: two bags of ice per session in summer at temperate latitudes, one bag in shoulder seasons, sometimes zero in a cold-winter garage where overnight lows do the work for you. Setup 3: Chest freezer conversion (about $250 to $320)

The chest-freezer plunge is the budget-tier answer to the no-ice-runs problem. A used seven to ten cubic-foot chest freezer runs $80 to $150 on secondhand marketplaces. Line it with a food-grade poly liner, around $40 to $60. Add a small submersible circulator pump so the water moves and does not freeze only at the walls, around $25 to $40. Wire it into a GFCI outlet. The US National Electrical Code (section 210.8) requires GFCI protection on receptacles in garages and outdoor locations, which is where nearly every home chest-freezer conversion lives. Budget $15 to $60 for the outlet, or a call to an electrician if the panel is not already prepared.

The compressor does the cold work for free after the upfront wiring. Electricity draw averages roughly 30 to 60 watts across the whole day (a chest freezer running as a plunge works harder than a food-storage one, but still spends most of its life idle between compressor cycles), which comes out to around $3 to $7 a month at US grid rates. The common mistakes at each tier
