Cold plunge and dopamine: what the research shows
The famous 250 percent dopamine number came from a small group of men in an hour of cold water in 2000. Here is what the study actually shows.

The short answer
Yes, cold water immersion appears to increase circulating dopamine in the studies that have looked. The famous "+250%" figure that fills the podcasts, though, comes from a single 2000 paper by Šrámek and colleagues that measured a small group of healthy men after an hour in 14 degree Celsius water. That is not the same experiment as three minutes in a stock tank at your house, and it does not extrapolate cleanly to it. The direction is probably real. The number is not yours.
Where "+250%" actually comes from
The single study people cite is Šrámek P, Šimečková M, Janský L, Šavlíková J, Vybíral S. "Human physiological responses to immersion into water of different temperatures." European Journal of Applied Physiology, 2000. A small group of healthy adult men were immersed to the neck for one hour in three water temperatures: 32°C (thermoneutral), 20°C (cool), and 14°C (cold). At 14 degrees, plasma dopamine rose about 250 percent above baseline; norepinephrine rose more; core temperature dropped.
Read that sentence again. A small group of men. One hour. Full-body immersion at 14 degrees Celsius. That is the source of "cold plunges triple your dopamine." Every popular retelling stretches it.
The reasons stretching it is a problem:
- Sample. A small group of young healthy male volunteers in Prague in the late 1990s. Not you.
- Dose. One hour is not a plunge, it is a research protocol. Almost nobody in the wellness market does this.
- Temperature. 14 degrees Celsius is on the warm end of what most home plungers use, so if you are sitting at 8 degrees, you are running a different experiment. The direction is probably the same; the numbers definitely aren't.
- Duration curve. The paper measured after an hour. It does not tell us the dopamine response of a three-minute session. Extrapolating a linear "so a three-minute plunge is 12.5 percent" is not how any of this works, and doing the reverse extrapolation to claim the same +250% is worse.
The chemistry is broadly plausible. Cold water is a strong sympathetic stimulus; it drives catecholamines up in most healthy adults; dopamine is one of them. The point of the paper is not "buy a $6,000 tub." The point of the paper is "here is what happened once, to a small group, under these specific conditions."
What the honest range looks like

Aside from Šrámek, a handful of other studies have measured catecholamine responses to cold water in small groups. They are broadly consistent in direction and messy in magnitude. Nobody has a study that answers "if I plunge three times a week for two minutes at 10 degrees, what happens to my baseline dopamine?" because that study is expensive to run and nobody has paid for it.
What we can say honestly:
- Cold immersion probably does trigger a real short-term catecholamine response in most healthy adults. That includes dopamine.
- The magnitude in a normal home session is almost certainly smaller than the "+250%" figure the podcasts cite.
- Whether that short-term spike translates into meaningful medium-term changes in mood, motivation, or reward sensitivity is not something the research has cleanly established. Some people report it. Some do not. The studies that would answer the question have not been run at the scale that would settle it.
If your reason for doing cold plunges is dopamine specifically, that is a fine reason and probably a partially correct one. If your reason for doing cold plunges is a promised 250 percent dopamine spike, please recalibrate. The practice is worth doing on more sober grounds than that.
Why the meme spread anyway
Two things happened. First, a very influential podcast repeatedly cited the Šrámek figure without the conditions. Second, "cold plunges triple dopamine" is a much better line than "cold plunges probably nudge dopamine, sometimes, in ways we have not fully mapped." One of those sentences gets shared. The other one is more accurate.
There is nothing wrong with being interested in the physiology. There is something wrong with using a decontextualised number as a marketing lever. Any product page that quotes "+250% dopamine" as a benefit of that product is quoting a study that had nothing to do with that product. Notice this the next time you see it.
What to take away
If you want to think about cold plunging in a way that will not disappoint you: the practice is doing something in the sympathetic nervous system, that something includes dopamine and norepinephrine, and it probably has a felt effect for the next few hours. The direction is real. The number is not personal. The felt effect is worth having on its own terms, without needing a percentage attached to it.
That is enough reason to do it. If you find, after a month of consistent sessions, that you feel differently on plunge days than non-plunge days, believe your own experience. If you find, after a month, that you feel about the same, that is also useful information. The research does not tell you whether you will notice. Your own weeks do.

Not exactly wrong; specific. The number is what happened in one study to a small group of men after an hour at 14 degrees. It is not the number for your two-minute session at 8 degrees, and no honest reading of the paper claims it is.
Can cold plunging help with depression?
Not in a way anyone should rely on instead of seeing a professional. Cold water immersion is not established as a therapy for clinical depression, and using it that way is a real mistake.
