What makes a good cold plunge thermometer
The best cold plunge thermometer is boring. Waterproof, readable, on a string, with batteries you can replace. Everything else is a distraction.

The short answer
A good cold plunge thermometer is boring. It is fully waterproof, has fresh batteries you can actually replace, has a display you can read at arm's length from the tub, and is either floating or on a string. Everything else is optional and usually a distraction. The features that matter cost about fifteen dollars. The features that make the marketing cost fifty. The battery in a fifty dollar sensor still dies at four degrees Celsius, at which point the fifteen dollar one is still working, and this pattern repeats.
What actually matters
The three things a thermometer has to do, ranked by how often they get skipped:
- Survive the water. A cold plunge thermometer lives in wet, cold, and often icy conditions for years. That environment is unforgiving to sealed electronics with plastic bezels and to any joint that trusts a rubber gasket to hold. Fully-immersion-rated (IP68 or a genuine "waterproof to X metres" rating on the packaging) is a real threshold; "water resistant" is not enough.
- Show you the temperature clearly. From the side of the tub, in poor light, without your reading glasses. A large digital LCD or a big analogue dial in a colour that contrasts with the water is what to look for. Backlight is a nice-to-have.
- Stay near where you are. A floating body, a tether string, a magnetic mount, or a hook. Something that means the thermometer is not at the bottom of the tub when you want it.
If a thermometer does all three, it is a good thermometer. Everything from here is refinement.
The categories worth knowing about
Three broad forms show up in real cold plunge use. Each has a job it does well.
Floating pool thermometer
The default, and the correct default for most people. A closed plastic body that floats on the water surface, with either a digital display in the body or an analogue dial. Ten to twenty dollars, sold at any pool supply store or online. Attach a piece of string and a small carabiner so it does not sail across the tub or into the drain when you agitate the water.
What it does well. Cheap, floats, close to indestructible, easy to read at arm's length. Fresh AAA batteries in a digital one last a year or more.
Where it falls short. Reads only the surface temperature, which is often a degree or two warmer than the mid-tub temperature after fresh ice has been added. In practice this rounding error does not matter for a beginner and most experienced plungers.
Corded probe thermometer

A small display unit with a wired probe you drop into the water. The probe is more accurate and reads mid-tub temperature; the display can sit on the side of the tub, on the deck, or clipped to the lip. Fifteen to thirty dollars.
What it does well. True water temperature at whatever depth you dropped the probe. Useful if you are dialling in a chiller, or if you plunge often enough to care about the difference between surface and mid-water reading.
Where it falls short. Two failure points: the cable joint at the probe (moisture ingress over months), and the display unit if it is not itself waterproof (splash damage). Buy a version where the display body is IP-rated, or accept that it lives inside a container on the deck.
Infrared spot thermometer
A handheld unit with a laser pointer that reads the surface temperature of anything you aim it at. Twenty to forty dollars. Not immersed at all.
What it does well. No cable, no float, no battery-in-cold-water risk. Great as a backup or a spot-check tool if your main thermometer has failed. Also useful for checking a chest freezer plunge without lifting the lid.
Where it falls short. Reads only the water surface, and only where you point it, at the moment you point it. Not a continuous reading. Also not accurate in strong sun or through steam. Not the primary tool.
What does not matter, honestly
The category of "smart" thermometers has a real problem. Every added feature is a new failure point in a permanently wet cold environment, and none of the added features make the water any colder.
- Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. A thermometer that logs your session to a phone is a nice novelty. It also has a Bluetooth chip that stops working when the batteries get cold, at which point you get to reset it on a Tuesday morning while standing in a snowdrift. Skip it.
- App integration. Same problem, larger surface area. Apps get discontinued. Sensors go silent. The number the sensor was reporting is the same number a five dollar dial was reporting more reliably.
- Sensor accuracy claims beyond half a degree. For cold plunge use, half a degree Celsius is well past the tolerance that matters. A thermometer claiming plus-or-minus 0.1 degree is either lying or optimising for the wrong problem.
- Multiple probes. For a home plunge, one reliable reading is enough. Multiple probes solve a research problem, not a bath problem.
If you are looking at a thermometer and its main selling point is a feature from the list above, look at a different thermometer.
The battery question
The single most annoying failure of any electronic thermometer in cold conditions is the battery. Standard alkaline AAAs lose meaningful capacity below about zero degrees Celsius, and even at four degrees they hold less charge than the packaging suggests.
Two practical rules:
- Buy a thermometer that uses standard replaceable batteries (AAA, AA, CR2032), not a permanently sealed internal battery. When the cold kills the battery in year two, you want to swap it in ten seconds, not throw the unit away.
- Bring the thermometer indoors between uses in cold weather. A thermometer that lives on the deck at minus five degrees Celsius has a shorter life than one that lives in a drawer.
Analogue dial thermometers do not care about temperature. If you are willing to trade the digital readout for a mechanical one, you also trade the battery problem for no problem at all.
How to test one before you trust it

Any new thermometer, before it goes into rotation, gets a quick calibration check that takes two minutes.
- Fill a glass with ice water: about two-thirds ice, one-third cold tap water. Stir for thirty seconds and let it settle. This is zero degrees Celsius (thirty-two Fahrenheit) within about half a degree, reliably.
- Put the thermometer in. Wait until the reading stops moving. It should read within about one degree of zero.
- If it reads off by two or more, it is not a good thermometer. Return it.
Most decent thermometers pass this test. The point of running it is to know for sure, on the one you own, that the reading you get from now on can be trusted.
Frequently asked questions
Do I really need a thermometer?
Yes, at some point. Cold water at fifteen degrees Celsius and cold water at five degrees are wildly different experiences, and you will want to know which you are doing. For a very first plunge in a bathtub you can skip it and use "the coldest my tap gives me." Past that, get one.
Digital or analogue?
For most people, digital, because the number is easier to read. Analogue is genuinely lower-maintenance and does not care about batteries; if the electronics of a digital thermometer already annoy you, an analogue dial is a legitimate choice.
Where should the thermometer read from?
Ideally mid-water at the depth you sit in. In practice, surface temperature from a floating thermometer is close enough for beginner and intermediate use. If you are dialling in a chiller, invest in a corded probe.
How often should I check the temperature?
Before you get in, always. Ice melt, changing ambient temperature, and chiller cycling all move the water temperature. The number when you sat down is the one that matters, not the one from thirty minutes ago.
What is the single feature I should refuse to pay extra for?
Any form of app connectivity. It is the highest-effort feature to build, the first thing to break, and the least useful feature in a cold wet environment. The thermometer's job is to show you a number.
