Step 1: Rinse off before the plunge

The single highest-return habit in the routine. About half of what fouls the water comes off you: sunscreen, deodorant residue, moisturiser, sweat, and whatever the pillowcase left behind. Thirty seconds in the shower before the plunge keeps most of it out of the tub entirely.

The common mistake here is skipping the rinse because "the plunge is water anyway." The plunge is a small closed volume; the shower is a big open one. What washes off in one stays in the other.

Step 2: Cover the tub between sessions

A cover is not just for temperature. A fifty-to-a-hundred-gallon dish sitting in whatever the local air is doing catches pollen in spring, dust and insects in summer, leaves in autumn, and something biological all year. A floating solar cover cuts that intake to nearly zero and roughly triples the interval before the water needs changing.

The common mistake here is buying the wrong style: a rigid lid that sits over the tub rim, leaving a big air gap above the water. Step 3: Dose small amounts of food-grade hydrogen peroxide

Specialty "cold plunge water treatment" bottles run $60 and, decoded, are dilute hydrogen peroxide with a lemon essential oil. The grocery-store 3% version is three dollars for the same volume of active ingredient and does the same job.

A common approach among home practitioners: roughly a cup to a cup-and-a-half of 3% food-grade peroxide per hundred gallons of tub volume, poured in while the water is moving, once a week. Peroxide decomposes into water and oxygen over roughly twenty-four hours, so there is nothing to filter out afterwards. The water does not sting eyes, does not smell of anything, and does not leave the residues chlorine does.

The common mistake here is reaching for the 12% or 35% "cleaning grade" peroxide bottle at the hardware store because it looks more efficient. Higher-concentration peroxide is a genuine skin-burn hazard the moment it splashes, and there is no benefit at tub-water dilution. 3% food-grade is the right call.

Step 4: Circulate and filter, if visible clarity is the goal

Circulation is what keeps peroxide well-distributed and prevents stagnation near the tub walls. If the tub has a chiller, its built-in pump already does this. If not, a $30 submersible pond pump with an in-line cartridge filter, run for an hour or two a few times a week, catches what peroxide alone will not: skin flakes, hair, mineral cloudiness.

The alternative is doing nothing and letting sediment settle, then skimming or vacuuming the bottom occasionally. Filtration is a comfort upgrade, not a hygiene requirement.

The common mistake here is buying a multi-stage aquarium filter for a plunge tub. Most of what those filters do is designed for keeping fish alive. A single cartridge does the job.

Step 5: Change the water when it stops looking right

Cold water does not grow the same films that hot tubs do, but nothing lasts forever. Signs it is time for a full change: the water starts smelling faintly earthy, a haze does not clear a day after peroxide dosing, or a slick feel appears on the tub walls when a finger runs along them.

For a covered tub with the routine above, that tends to be three to four weeks between full changes in temperate weather. In peak summer, half of that. In a covered outdoor tub through winter, some practitioners push six weeks or more, depending on how many people are in the tub and how often.

The common mistake here is changing on a strict weekly schedule regardless of what the water looks like. Fine if the water bill is not a factor; wasteful otherwise. Let the tub tell you.

What about ozone, UV, and chlorine?

An ozone generator or a UV steriliser ring is the next tier up in home treatment. Both work. Both cost $150 to $400 for hardware, and both need a plumbed loop that most stock tanks and inflatable tubs do not have out of the box. For a permanent outdoor setup with a chiller and filter loop already in place, they earn their price by letting the water sit for months without much attention. For a garage tub that gets drained every few weeks, they are overkill.

Chlorine works, and is what public pools and shared plunges use, but it changes the smell and skin-feel of the water in ways many home cold-plungers deliberately got into cold plunging to avoid. Skip chlorine unless the setup is shared, high-volume, or somewhere the peroxide-per-gallon math tips against you.

Troubleshooting

Water is cloudy after peroxide. Clarity usually returns within six to twelve hours. If the haze is still there a day later, run the filter, or change the water.

Faint chlorine smell after adding peroxide. The bottle is probably a "pool shock" peroxide product with added stabilisers. Switch to a plain grocery-store 3% food-grade bottle.

Slick feel on the tub walls. Biofilm establishing itself. Drain the tub, scrub the sides with a soft brush and a peroxide-and-water mix, refill.

An insect or leaf in the water. Scoop it out and continue. One bug is not a hygiene emergency.

The water smells fine but the paranoia is real. Cold water slows the growth of most common skin and pool bacteria, but it does not sterilise. An open wound is a good reason to sit that session out. For anyone immunocompromised, this is a doctor conversation, not a water-chemistry one.
